Multiple t-shirt design concepts for a local plant-based Italian restaurant, inspired by the owner's love of heavy metal band merch.
For my ARTF 104 class (Artists and Designers Today), one of the tasks for my final project was to reach out to a local business and offer to design something for them. I chose Donna Jean because I'm genuinely a fan of their food and wanted to work with a brand I already knew and cared about.
The owner had a clear style they were going for. My job was to bring Donna Jean into it.
After reaching out, their team mentioned that the owner is a huge 80s metal fan and had already made band logo-inspired merch before, including a shirt using the AC/DC logo but spelling out "PASTA" with the slash acting as the S. They said they're always looking for new t-shirt ideas and asked if I'd be willing to design another shirt in that same spirit.
I designed three distinct concepts: a Metallica-inspired wordmark with lightning bolt brackets around "DONNA JEAN," a clean bold-serif Guns N' Roses-inspired wordmark replacing the band name with "PIZZAS N' PASTAS," and a circular design with a detailed food illustration and pizza cutters, meant to resemble the Guns N' Roses emblem.
In the end, Donna Jean's team was very happy with the final designs, and they liked the Metallica-inspired design the most.
